if you follow me on instagram, you’ve noticed plenty of updates to the house recently {examples here + here}. well i’ve got lots more up my sleeve, including in max’s room. i’ve slowlllllly been making it more of a “big girl” room and in the past couple months have really felt the need to design it more intentionally rather than just piece mail it {side note: i’m actually a fan of piece mailing. sometimes it’s what just works, whether for your budget or for small updates to a space.}

the latest round of updates began a couple months ago when i swapped this dresser {purchased for the room before max was born and served us well for 3+ years} for this armoire from joss & main. i wanted the clothes to be more accessible for her and was tired of seeing her pretty pieces folded up in a dresser. but we needed something that wasn’t super wide otherwise the door can’t open. i ended up removing a shelf, and adding a rod and new hardware {knobs + handle} and it’s perfect! note: we do have a small closet in this room. it’s a weird size + layout {as are most things in an almost 200 year old house} and is currently home to some of bill’s clothes and other storage items so it’s not practical for max’s everyday use right now.

my father-in-law, a retired electrician, came from connecticut to do a major lighting overhaul a few weeks ago. in addition to adding recessed lighting, new fans, and an over-sink pendant in the kitchen, he updated the dining room light, moved the existing light in max’s room to the playroom {bye bye massive fan light combo that made no sense}, and installed this new flush mount in her room! the ceilings on the 2nd floor are just under 7’ which means lighting options are very limited. the new light hangs down a little more than the other one but really opens up the small room and adds a contemporary touch.

since we just had the house outfitted in all new hunter douglas woven wood shades from innuwindow {separate post to come on that!}, i was looking forward to switching up the curtains in here as well. shockingly {insert sarcasm} i was a bit indecisive but on a whim decided to order these belgian flax linen curtains from west elm. i’ve always loved this room by amber interiors and was looking to take a bit of a risk with this redesign. i’m SO HAPPY with them!

ok so that’s what’s been done so far to the room. so what you ask is still to come?

paint! when i was designing still-in-my-belly-max’s nursery, i wanted something neutral but not white. i came across benjamin moore’s patriotic white and was sold. depending on the light and the decor, it looks a little blue or a little pistachio. fast forward 4 years, and i’m ready for a change. so when benjamin moore reached out about partnering to support their 2020 Color of the Year First Light, it felt meant to be. i’m not usually a huge fan of pink walls but first light is a pretty subtle shade and the earthy green curtains helps keep the design grounded…and not overly feminine or expected. and let’s be honest, max is a very typical 3 year old girl who does indeed love pink so she’ll be thrilled.

a new / old mural on the bed wall! now some may say i’m crazy but i am replacing our existing anewall oh deer mural in the dark color…with the oh deer mural in the light color. hear me out. i truly love its design. and max still loves it. it’s impactful + whimsical and i think age appropriate for the next few years. but i really want to brighten things up a bit in here and feel the lighter color will do just that + play really well with the curtains in particular. i’m lucky enough to partner with the anewall ladies again on this and it’s already arrived so we’ll install soon!

rounding out the design are some pillows, blankets and more. and i’m sure i’ll incorporate some other little things because duh.
