max’s room in the past couple months / #farmhousedialfano max’s room in the past couple months / #farmhousedialfano if you follow me on instagram, you’ve noticed plenty of updates to the house recently {examples here + here}. well i’ve got lots more up my sleeve, including in max’s room. i’ve slowlllllly been making it more of a “big girl” room and in the past couple months have really felt the need to design it more intentionally rather than just piece mail it {side note: i’m actually a fan of piece mailing. sometimes it’s what just works, whether for your budget or for small updates to a space.} the latest round of updates began a couple months ago when i swapped this dresser {purchased for the room before max was born and served us well for 3+ years} for this armoire from joss & main. i wanted the clothes to be more accessible for her and was tired of seeing her pretty pieces folded up in a dresser. but we needed something that wasn’t super wide otherwise the door can’t open. i ended up removing a shelf, and adding a rod and new hardware {knobs + handle} and it’s perfect! note: we do have a small closet in this room. it’s a weird size + layout {as are most things in an almost 200 year old house} and is currently home to some of bill’s clothes and other storage items so it’s not practical for max’s everyday use right now. new armoire in max’s room new pendant over the sink my father-in-law, a retired electrician, came from connecticut to do a major lighting overhaul a few weeks ago. in addition to adding recessed lighting, new fans, and an over-sink pendant in the kitchen, he updated the dining room light, moved the existing light in max’s room to the playroom {bye bye massive fan light combo that made no sense}, and installed this new flush mount in her room! the ceilings on the 2nd floor are just under 7’ which means lighting options are very limited. the new light hangs down a little more than the other one but really opens up the small room and adds a contemporary touch. since we just had the house outfitted in all new hunter douglas woven wood shades from innuwindow {separate post to come on that!}, i was looking forward to switching up the curtains in here as well. shockingly {insert sarcasm} i was a bit indecisive but on a whim decided to order these belgian flax linen curtains from west elm. i’ve always loved this room by amber interiors and was looking to take a bit of a risk with this redesign. i’m SO HAPPY with them! ok so that’s what’s been done so far to the room. so what you ask is still to come? mockup with benjamin moore first light / #farmhousedialfano mockup with anewall oh deer mural + benjamin moore first light / #farmhousedialfano paint! when i was designing still-in-my-belly-max’s nursery, i wanted something neutral but not white. i came across benjamin moore’s patriotic white and was sold. depending on the light and the decor, it looks a little blue or a little pistachio. fast forward 4 years, and i’m ready for a change. so when benjamin moore reached out about partnering to support their 2020 Color of the Year First Light, it felt meant to be. i’m not usually a huge fan of pink walls but first light is a pretty subtle shade and the earthy green curtains helps keep the design grounded…and not overly feminine or expected. and let’s be honest, max is a very typical 3 year old girl who does indeed love pink so she’ll be thrilled. a new / old mural on the bed wall! now some may say i’m crazy but i am replacing our existing anewall oh deer mural in the dark color…with the oh deer mural in the light color. hear me out. i truly love its design. and max still loves it. it’s impactful + whimsical and i think age appropriate for the next few years. but i really want to brighten things up a bit in here and feel the lighter color will do just that + play really well with the curtains in particular. i’m lucky enough to partner with the anewall ladies again on this and it’s already arrived so we’ll install soon! rounding out the design are some pillows, blankets and more. and i’m sure i’ll incorporate some other little things because duh. did you know you can follow hashtags on instagram? hope 2019 is off to a great start! if you follow me on instagram, you may have seen some stories about what i found at target this past week. it is SO FREAKING. GOOD. and you seem to agree since i got many a DM’s blaming (thanking?) me for making you place an order or visit a store. most are project 62 which is their more modern line and they’re just killing it right now. soft and muted earth tones, stoneware and earthenware, organic wood tones. like i said, SO good! i’ve rounded up some of my favorites including a few that have now found a home in #farmhousedialfano {seen above}. one / perhaps my favorite, this is billed as a planter but i brought it home to corral toys, books + stuffed animals. two / currently residing on our interior define couch. note: it’s bigger than the usual pillow size. three / this earthenware vase is the perfect neutral. four / i first saw the bench version via kismet house’s instagram and didn’t realize there was a matching chair until i came across it in the store. i’m DYING to find a spot for it in our house. five / cute bud vase. six / this elephant basket would look adorable in a kids room or playspace. there’s also a llama version. seven / these hearth & hand wood scoops came home with me. eight / another great option for storage or a plant. nine / i am kicking myself for not buying this wood letterboard and may have to reconsider. ten / got this pillow for the chair in max’s room. eleven / technically a tealight candle holder but i love the idea of using it for a plant, dried grass or even pens + pencils! twelve / a pretty bowl that could hold fruit in the kitchen or keys in the entryway. thirteen / i picked up this side table for our living room. i want something smaller than what’s currently there and i love that this has storage! fourteen / hearth & hand wood plates perfect for entertaining. fifteen / the terrazzo trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. sixteen / i love this earthenware tray but it really can only be for decorative purposes. seventeen / this stoneware picture frame is just what i was looking for without even knowing it. i’m currently making changes to part of our living room and one of the new details is a gallery ledge {seen here however it already looks different!}. happy friday + happy shopping! #hearthamphand #mStarrdesign #project62 #opalhouse #kismethouse #threshold #target

instagram best nine happy new year friends! it’s hard to believe another year has come and gone and we’re onto 2019. 2018 was one of change. a year of many happy moments, yet a year of unease. a year dominated by the struggle of balancing mom guilt and being a business owner. a year where i didn’t feel great physically thanks to lingering lyme disease symptoms, chronic migraine-related vertigo (something i’ve had for almost two decades), and persistent neck and back pain. a year where i also felt a genuine shift within myself. perhaps it’s because i have changed. perhaps it’s because this little business of mine has a new direction. perhaps it’s because i turn 40 next year. FORTY?! speaking of 40, where should we go to celebrate the big birthday? taking any + all travel recs! my brother’s wedding in colorado / chrisman studios 2018 saw us navigating toddlerhood. max is a happy, inquisitive, loving 2 year old who brings joy to so many. we’re dealing with the usual challenges of parenting a toddler, especially one with such a strong personality but we are so very lucky to have this girl in our lives. 2018 flipped a switch in how i want #farmhousedialfano to look and function. i’m in constant purging mode and am trying to make the best choices for our home and family…taking into account max’s changing needs, the restrictions our 200 year old house presents, and balancing them with my ever-present desire to keep things fresh aesthetically and have quality instagram content! nancy + mark / ruth eileen photography barrie + danny / belathée 2018 saw mStarr transition away from weddings, finishing the year with just two {they were beauties!} and more towards interior styling, brand partnerships, and creative direction. it’s taken a couple years to figure out my priorities for the business, including what i enjoy doing + what i think is viable for mStarr. i’m excited about what’s next! more to come on this in the near future… #mstarrwinchesternursery #mstarrsouthiecondo i worked with some great brands and companies this year including interior define, lulu & georgia, blinds.com, style me pretty and david’s bridal, and have some exciting partnerships coming up in the next several months. your dream bridal lookbook / elizabeth laduca style me pretty for david’s bridal / becca brendler photography i’m a bit wary of resolutions but i hope this year brings…more calm, growth as a person, mother + wife, further clarity + growth for mStarr, less worry, more travel, more being present, more awareness, less guilt, more acceptance, less judgement, more mrs. maisel, and more self care {remember, i’m turning 40.
