- #MSTARRXOHIDESIGN Makeover Update...the Design! Plus some promo codes!
AN IN-PROGRESS LOOK AT #FARMHOUSEDIALFANO SHIPLAP / MSTARR DESIGN Who is ready for an #mstarrxohidesign makeover update? Me me! Jess and I have been knee deep in final design decisions while also executing many of our foundational elements (have you been following my Wallplanks installation on stories?!). Don’t know what the #mstarrxohidesign project even is?! Well I’m designing Jess’ (of Oh I Design) *guest room/temporary office and she’s designing our main bedroom! Catch up on my posts, Jess’ posts, and on Instagram stories here, here, and here! *When we kicked off our project, I was tackling her guest room which was also serving as a temporary nursery for her son Harvey and then Covid hit so it became an office for her husband Cody. Well...Harvey has officially moved into his sister’s room so we aren’t designing around a crib anymore! However with both she and her husband at home for the foreseeable future, we did have to incorporate a desk setup. The design process has been a very collaborative effort with Jess. I think we both assumed it would play out like this but it’s been awfully fun for us {and maybe not so fun for our husbands who were roped into some projects they weren’t expecting}! We’re just constantly bouncing ideas off each other with one idea then leading to another...and one dilemma leading to a better solution. We’ve tossed out ideas that seem wayyyy out there, reinforced decisions, and pushed each other to come up with the best possible elements for each of our rooms. Jess and I are super fortunate to be collaborating with so many amazing partners on this project, even more so during a pandemic. Covid has certainly changed things up a bit for us...it’s been a more unconventional design process but has actually allowed us to slow down, to not rush decisions, and offer some overall flexibility. We’ve been sharing smaller reveals rather than just a few big ones however there has been one primary downside…deliveries + installs that are out of “sequence”. For instance, in a non-Covid world it would’ve been ideal to receive the furniture, you know, after the carpet was installed 😂. Anyways, here goes! JESS’ GUEST ROOM Paint The great thing about Clare is they have plenty of colors to choose from but not so many that you feel overwhelmed. We decided on Snow Day as the primary color which is not too warm, not too cool, and just right for this room. But I also wanted to add some type of color using paint so I threw out the idea of painting the 2 sets of closet doors in Clare’s Set in Stone. Jess was into it in theory but understandably hesitant {I’m not sure I was even sold, ha} so our plan was to paint one of the doors to see what we thought and if it didn’t work, they could always paint it white again. Well, spoiler alert...they turned out GORGEOUS. Set in Stone is a rich grey with blueish undertones and it adds the perfect punch to a wall that would otherwise be unremarkable as it’s almost entirely doors with little room for any decor elements. Jess and Cody were painting the doors this past weekend and after seeing them painted, we started questioning whether we should paint the trim too. Jess sent a pic and I quickly popped it into Photoshop but we decided to leave the trim white. It feels more polished and let’s the doors truly shine. Carpet Jess’ home and her personal aesthetic leans more contemporary but with transitional elements. She is able to curate so well and cut through the clutter, poorly-made pieces, and excess “crap”. So I wanted a carpet that was simple but impactful. A grid-like pattern was at the top of the list so Matt from The Carpet Workroom sent over some samples and were almost immediately sold on the Bellbridge City Block 720-1506. We wanted something that felt nice underfoot but it could be a flat weave since it’s a guest room with less traffic. However, we did do a thicker rug pad so it feels cozier. The design feels fresh and versatile should they ever want to make changes down the line with textiles. We decided against wall-to-wall but wanted to cover most of the room so had TCW leave 12” of floor showing during installation. Furniture Our Chilton furniture was delivered last month and honestly the quality and craftsmanship has exceeded our expectations. These are handcrafted heirloom pieces to last a lifetime, and well worth the investment. And we LOVE that they’re made in New England by artisan woodworkers. Jess was hoping for a new bed, nightstands, and dresser in the room and so she received! I was smitten with the MS2 bed which has a shaker tape headboard {Queen size}, the Foundation dresser which has unique cutouts instead of hardware, and Acadia nightstands (the style of which we went with for the dresser in my room). Chilton offers most pieces in a variety of different woods so we were able to truly customize these pieces. Overall we wanted the furniture to be light in color but introduce a little contrast so we decided on a rift sawn oak with natural tape for the bed, and a lighter maple for the dresser and nightstands. Lighting There’s a good chance that you’ve seen Hudson Valley lighting without even knowing it. They offer a wide assortment of lighting options that are sold through various retailers and we are thrilled to be partnering with them for this project! We actually went back and forth quite a bit on what type of lighting we wanted in Jess’ room. At first we discussed doing table lamps on the nightstands but they would’ve taken up too much space so in the end, I decided on woven Solana sconces over each nightstand and the Freeman Table Lamp on the dresser. The sconces are SO good, adding an organic but refined element, and the lamp is a showstopper with its black color and large size. Both of our choices offer additional lighting depending on who is in the room and for what purpose. Bedding, Mattress + Pillows Dear Garnet Hill, I love you. Your bedding is a dream and I was eyeing so many pieces for Jess’ room. We both wanted to keep things neutral but still make a statement and ended up going with Standard Solid Relaxed Linen shams in White, Standard Solid Relaxed Linen pillowcases in White, Queen Solid Relaxed Linen flat sheet and fitted sheet in White, Queen Solid Relaxed Linen duvet cover in Oatmeal and a Double/Queen Eileen Fisher Waves Silk Quilt in Blue Slate to pull out the grey/blue Clare paint we used. All of this with their new Avocado Green mattress topper and Green pillows, and the setup is so good that Jess is {not-so-secretly} wishing this wasn’t a guest room and in fact her own room! We’re both fans of Danielle Oakey’s shop and couldn’t wait to incorporate a few pillows into our designs. Not all design decisions work out at first and this was a good example! I originally selected 2 Arbor pillows in the 20 x 20” size, and the Black Woven Stripe in 14 x 20" looking to layer them. However, seeing the lower-profile headboard with the mattress in person, we realized that too many pillows would block too much of it and we wanted to see as much of the beautiful headboard as possible! So we decided on just the stripe pillow on the bed which is actually quite perfect, and will use at least one of the Arbor pillows elsewhere in the room (perhaps on the desk chair). Window Treatments Window treatments can really shape how a room comes together and we are starting from scratch in Jess’ room. She wanted shades and curtains for both functional and decorative purposes. Enter Alva. Their mission is to simplify the custom window treatment process...which let’s be honest, is pretty important to everyone especially these days! We are actually waiting on samples but are loving the idea of a darker linen curtain against a lighter roman shade. We are leaning towards unlined pinch pleat drapes in the fog color (with a black french return curtain rod) with blackout flat roman shades in oyster. One of the things I love the most about Alva is they show videos of the actual fabric so you can get a real feel for how it looks. Artwork Do you follow Katie of Halfway Wholelistic? Well she started Collection Prints, offering affordable and accessible art downloads and prints and we are so happy to be working with them on our project! We’re still working through exact placement, sizes and frame options but for Jess’ room I knew I wanted to stick to our contemporary meets transitional vibe. I showed her Patchwork which is a soft watercolor-esque print, Low Tide {which I love for over the bed}, and Knot, an abstract line design. Stay tuned for more on this... Frames That beautiful art needs to be displayed beautifully…enter Simply Framed! Like other custom framing services, they offer well-priced framing options in a variety of materials and sizes but they offer something unique that was very helpful for this project: the ability to customize a frame without the artwork in it. We hadn’t finalized our art at the time we ordered our frames so it worked out perfectly (and bonus: we can easily swap out the artwork down the road if we want!). Chair and Desk So as I mentioned earlier in the post, we were able to lose the crib but like so many others, the desk setup is here to stay. Jess recently purchased this CB2 desk so we wanted to incorporate it into the design. It’s simple, on the small size, and the white breaks up all the wood pieces in the room. I did however want to update the chair situation and went gaga over this mink velvet one, also from CB2. Luckily Jess agreed! MY BEDROOM Paint + Shiplap I really wanted some type of treatment to add character to the room and Jess and I both agreed on shiplap, installed vertically to help elongate (our ceilings are under 7’!) and provide a more contemporary feel. You can follow the Wallplanks installation in my stories (there have been some challenges given our uneven walls and ceiling!). The classic shiplap is going up on the wall behind our dresser and bed and I’m absolutely thrilled with how it looks! We decided on Clare’s Classic as the primary color in the room while doing an accent color on the shiplap behind the dresser in Current Mood, which is legit one of the prettiest colors EVER. It’s a perfect dusty green and is so good that we wanted to incorporate it somewhere else in the room. Our nightstand options were limited given the small space available so I asked Jess what she thought about painting our existing nightstand in Current Mood. Figured it was a no-lose situation because if we didn’t like it, we’d just get a new one. I added new hardware and well, spoiler alert...it’s amazing. PROMO CODE: Use code MSTARR35 for 35% off your Wallplanks orders Carpet Carpet was one of the first decisions we made, really in conjunction with the paint selections. I wanted something soft underfoot, something that felt luxurious. Jess and I agreed that we’d forego anything with a pattern or color since the room is small and didn’t want it to feel overpowered. Matt at The Carpet Workoom sent a bunch of samples and we ended up going with DMI Poetic in Bone. It’s heaven walking on this carpet! It’s textured, soft without being a very high pile, and has depth in color due to small fibers woven throughout. This addition to the room is perhaps the biggest change in my eyes because we’ve never had a rug that marries the two “sides” of our horizontal room. The room feels cozy and put together now. Similar to Jess’ room, we skipped wall to wall and instead had TCW leave 5” of floor showing. Furniture We’ve touched on this before but there is essentially just one layout for our bedroom given the shape and size. Storage was number one priority for me because our almost 200-year-old home has very little of it. I told Jess that we would need to replace our existing {and old} dresser and armoire. I had my shoes in an over-the-door shoe rack like a college kid for longer than I care to admit so I was very much looking forward to putting them all in the new armoire along with small bags, workout gear + loungewear. The dresser would remain home for socks, underwear + bras, and tees. We spent a lot of time thinking through what wood tones to go with in my room but Jess honed in on Chilton’s Acadia Dresser and Shaker Wardrobe (which offers both hanging and shelf storage} pretty quickly. Ultimately we decided on the dresser in maple which is a lighter wood and the armoire in a plain sawn white oak. And they are BEAUTIFUL. And so spacious. I had some Anthropologie knobs lying around so I added those to the armoire doors and used the same ring knobs from the nightstand on the drawers! Because the door opens up right to the bed (we have a King size and despite it being tight, would never go smaller!), our options for a bed frame were very limited. We ultimately decided to stick with our existing wood platform and I purchased this french seam (aka flanged) headboard and it’s truly perfect for the room. Lighting Thankfully we have recessed lighting in our bedroom because decorative lighting options are limited. Wall space is at a premium given the small room has 2 windows, 3 doors, and a built in! We decided on doing a sconce over one side of the bed and because of the shiplap and overall hassle, really wanted a plug-in option. Jess selected the Roslyn sconce in Aged Brass from Hudson Valley and I’m obsessed with it. It’s so nice that the cord is encased in brass! We also decided on one Calabria PTL1011 table lamp that we’ll put on the dresser next to the arched mirror. I’ve seen this lamp before and love the earthy vibe. It hasn’t arrived yet but it’s going to really pop against the green wall! Bedding, mattress + pillows Coming from a very sad bedroom situation, I wanted our bed to be particularly luxurious. Not fancy of course but comfortable, layered, and lush. We liked the idea of linen and timeless stripes and Garnet Hill has no shortage of those options. Jess decided on standard Eileen Fisher solid washed linen pillowcases in Pure White, king Eileen Fisher solid washed linen shams in Pure White, king Eileen Fisher solid washed linen flat sheet in Pure White, king Eileen Fisher solid washed linen fitted sheet in Pure White, king striped relax linen duvet cover in Oatmeal Broad Stripe and an Eileen Fisher gauzy stripe reversible blanket in Quiet Gray for the end of the bed. With our Avocado Green mattress, Green Topper, and Green Pillows, I never want to get out of bed in the morning! For pillows, it was important to break up all the stripes so when Jess showed me the Felicity (in 22 x 22"), and the Arbor Noir (in 14 x 36”), I was sold. Window Treatments We already have beautiful roman shades in our room so we only needed curtains to round out the design. While you don’t need both shades and curtains, it’s a nice layered look. If the samples look how we expect them to, we’re planning on unlined pinch pleat drapes in oyster flax linen, and are between a brass and black curtain rod! Art We were both feeling a vintage-inspired piece of art for next to the bed and I love the one Jess chose (Wild Oak). There’s some wall space between a window and the armoire that used to have a full-length mirror but after I stumbled upon this mirror at Target that we put on the dresser, that space is freed up for art! Jess thought stacking Wild Herb I and Wild Herb II would be pretty, and I completely agreed! Frames We decided on all dark wood frames from Simply Framed for my room and went with Gallery Walnut for Wild Oak and Gallery Dark Walnut for the two herb prints. - Trick or Treat...Tasteful Halloween Decor for Everyone
While I’m still decorating for Fall (well really just decorating the new house in general), I’m looking happily ahead to Halloween decor! The good (ie: not tacky) decor tends to sell out quickly so if you haven’t checked out my Halloween Shop, this post is for you! I tend to keep things festive while staying away from all things orange, and thinking a bit outside the box. Perhaps the one thing I’m looking forward to the most? Finally having a Frame TV and displaying skeleton + bat art! A few tips for keeping your decor chic and neutral but still whimsical (I shared these last year but are still quite relevant)… 01. The key to all of this decor is to use them sparsely and find unexpected places to accent. Think trays, open shelving, the ceiling! It makes me genuinely smile when I see a tiny skeleton just chilling on the kitchen shelf. 02. It’s also a good time to swap out or add some floral elements. Moody leaves or dark branches. 03. Move things around, especially if you have kids! It's that time when I yearn for a slower pace of life and start incorporating more cozy layers + textures into #farmhousedialfano. A clean slate as a new season starts and I couldn't be more excited to decorate our new home this Fall! I tend to rely on the same retailers for seasonal updates and no more so than Wayfair. - #farmhousedialfano the Sequel...our Bedroom Plans
our bedroom in the last house / #mstarrxohidesign with Jessica Klein of Oh I Design / photo by Ruth Eileen Photography So it’s been awhile eh? The past few months have been jam packed with packing, moving, unpacking, organizing, managing deliveries that show up without any notice, and more unpacking. Day by day, we are getting settled and are absolutely in love with our new home, location, and town! I feel like each room has been getting a little or a lot of love in terms of design and unlike our last house (where I waited until 6 years after moving in to do much of anything to our bedroom) I am thrilled to be focusing on our current bedroom NOW! Thankfully since the design was so recent (catch up on the #mstarrxohidesign collaboration), I come armed with beautiful furniture and decor pieces so I’m really just filling in the holes. I even partnered with Clare again to paint the walls in Classic because it’s just the loveliest neutral that isn’t too warm, isn’t too cool, yet brightens things up! So above is what the room looked like in the listing photos. A robin’s egg blue color, an odd pendant light, and with some kinda interesting/kinda strange paneling on only 2 walls. Keeping the paneling for now but as mentioned above, painted the room! Here’s what it looks like now… The room, while not huge, is much bigger than the last one but similar to the old one, the layout is somewhere constrained due to the placement of a radiator (I remain torn on whether I find the radiators in the house charming or troublesome). Our king bed only has one place to go and that’s in front of the window. It was not what I was hoping for but I’m starting to actually like it. I played around with the placement of our Chilton wardrobe and dresser and the room now has a nice flow but I was itching to finish up the design. I’m really just building on the foundation of our previous room, adding additional layers and patterns and textures. I’m going for a sophisticated, English cottage-esque vibe and I think I’m there!? See below… FROM TOP LEFT: My new favorite curtains…blackout, chic, and affordable! / Our vintage Lane side table…a FB Marketplace score last year / I’m overjoyed to be partnering with Shades of Light on Star Swing Arm Sconces and this ruffled marble stunner of a flush mount! My plan is to use these Maison Maison woven shades on the sconces. / Clare Classic paint / One Kings Lane Frank Linen Headboard (french seam) in Talc / Our existing Danielle Oakey Estelle and Harriett pillows. The best. / The wood platform bed we’ve had forever. / I am most excited about a new rug for this space since the last room required a custom carpet to properly fit the strange shape. My friends at Loloi never disappoint and this beauty from the Rifle x Loloi line just arrived. She’s perfect. / While this isn’t 100% confirmed, I’m leaning towards this vintage nightstand from FB Marketplace as I’ve been wanting to mix + match vintage nightstands. I’m just waiting for the seller to get back into town but I love the darker color and will add some new hardware. It’s nice that's it’s a bit wider too as it will go on my side which has more space than Bill’s. / Georgia from Juniper Print Shop. I added her to the old room right before moving and she’s definitely staying! / I have yet to tire of our eyelet duvet and sheets from Garnet Hill! Same with our Casaluna blanket from Target. / These Serena & Lily scalloped baskets were supposed to arrive last month and it appears they won’t come for another month or two (insert sad face) but when they do, they’ll find their new home in this room! / One of my favorite vases from Abode Shoppe here in Massachusetts (they ship! Use MSTARR10 for 10% off!). / Our beloved Chilton wardrobe in Plain Sawn White Oak with Anthropologie Streamline Knobs in Brass and Amazon ring pull knobs. / I thought Target had retired our French Country wood mirror but it’s back in stores! / I’m still on the hunt for a bench but if going with the darker nightstand, I like the idea of a darker bench and this one from Overstock is affordable and timeless. / Our other piece from Chilton, the Acadia Dresser in Maple, is truly one of the most gorgeous pieces of furniture I could ever dream of owning. / No way I’m ditching the Calabria lamp from Troy Lighting. / I plan on bringing one of my Jayson Home Seagrass Vases in here and filling with both fresh and faux flowers. - #farmhousedialfano the Sequel...We're Moving!
a view from the new house Yes it’s true, we’re moving! #farmhousedialfano is getting a sequel. And thank goodness it’s another farmhouse otherwise WHAT WOULD I DO?! Ditch the hashtag? Use it anyways? Neither was a good option. We’d been talking about moving for awhile and with Max starting Kindergarten in the Fall, it ideally needed to happen before then, especially if we were moving towns…which we are! Back in March we had our realtors come to the house to just tell us what we might need to do to get it ready to sell, whether a month from then or 6 months. Fun fact: one of the women is married to one of my brother’s closest friends from growing up and the other is the previous owner of our current home!! It’s all very full circle. Anyways, besides touching up some paint and plaster? Nothing else needed to be done and they said that if we were going to sell, we should get our act together and do it soon because Spring is always a busy time and we’re in the midst of a sellers market. So we said F it, we’ll put it on the market at the end of April which gives a month to declutter and start looking for a new house. And then…a week later we found our new house. Which of course wasn’t the plan considering our house was definitely not listed and the idea of 2 mortgages isn’t the most appealing (or realistic). But it’s in the town that was our #1 choice, and it’s quite small with fewer listings and we knew we had to make a move. We made an offer, received a counter, and met it. We then pushed our house up 2 weeks! Our current town is a hot one and the house sold within a few days. PHEW. In all honesty, it was not a great few weeks. It was physically and emotionally trying. Decluttering everyday life with a 4 year old and a business at home (oh AND Bill is still working from home) was um, not fun. That final week of clearing out, taking photos, and showings was brutal and I hardly slept. Of course now I’m grateful because the packing process is already 1/4 of the way done! We move in just a few short weeks (though it feels so far away still) and while I’ve shared some sneaks on my New House Instastories highlight, it feels like the right time to officially intro #farmhousedialfano the sequel! The house is only 3 miles away from where we are now but feels a world away. The town is so charming with lots of land but not a lot of residents and makes you think you’re in the country but you’re not! The current owner has been there for 5 years and oh the upgrades she made! We have 2 pages of them, cosmetic and functional alike, and feel super fortunate to be able to mostly focus on the fun stuff. Some highlights… / It was built in 1898. / We’re gaining about 300 more square feet plus basement storage which is a nice upgrade without it feeling too overwhelming. / There is a large open space kitchen/living/dining room which is a bit unusual for an older home. And we also get 2 more living spaces in the form of a den and what we’ll use as a playroom/library! / There’s a completely fenced-in, beautifully-landscaped back yard with 2 access points from the house. / It has a koi pond with a little waterfall! Anyone know the best fish to use? I heard goldfish?? / It’s flooded with natural light. / There’s original pine flooring that is mismatched and quite lovely (if not a little too warm for my taste but that’s ok). / We have A BARN. Half will be for yard stuff and the other half will be for mStarr. While it does have electricity, it’s more of a 3 season space so as of now it’ll be mostly for storage but I’m excited thinking about the possibilities of it as a true (little) studio space! There’s a lot to share so I’m going to stick to photo highlights for now… A charming window with seat (I plan to add a radiator cover underneath) Skylights. That is al Cute little ledge over the staircase. Love this simple moment in the entry. Built-in cutting boards that I find kinda charming (and useful). Potential. Claw foot tub…when is my first bath?! The view out of one of the windows in Max’s room. That built-in!! The ceiling in here is getting a fabulous treatment. The little koi pond. A peek into the backyard. Bruno and Max are going to have a field day! Our primary entrance and exit which takes us into the den. It’s a small and cozy space that’ll also serve as a mudroom of sorts given the closet. A french door between the entry and kitchen/living/dining. Considering adding a cremone bolt! A unique half bath (it’s quite narrow but long and has a closet) with a beautiful decorative window. One of two sliders to the backyard, this one through what will be the playroom/library (and home to our Peloton). A little peek at the outside of the barn! And a little peek inside the barn! I’m not sure it’s possible to be completely ready or prepared to go through the buying and selling process, and realize how privileged we are. Leaving this house is going to be hard but knowing we’re passing it on in such great condition to the new owners, and to be a part of its nearly 200 year old history, is pretty cool. And we’re all so excited for the new house and what it has to offer! Selfishly, I’m VERY excited to have so many new spaces to design over time and to capture and share on Instagram (I’ve admittedly gotten very tired of taking the same pics and angles of the current house over and over…). Well this one wowed me. And I’m so glad I did click because it took me to one of the prettiest portfolio albums! Katie Holloman of Holloman Interiors designed the Dutch Fields home in Midway, Utah, a new construction project that looks anything but. Filled with architectural charm, mix + match patterns, and contrasting colors, this house is a DREAM. I’m genuinely smitten with every single room and detail, particularly so with the block print roman shades in the living room, the gold sconces over the range in the kitchen, the scalloped floors in one of the bathrooms, and mismatching tiled fireplace in a bedroom. It’s such a nostalgic, timeless, and charming design don’t you agree? Throw in some gingham and you get a sense for my design direction these days. So when Serena & Lily sent over some of their new products, I was positively delighted and had to share some of my favorites. ALSO, there’s a sale going on right now on all outdoor styles, some of which I included below… 01. Maybe the prettiest baskets I’ve ever seen and they are absolutely finding a place in Max’s room and/or playroom. 02. Gingham shams in the perfect neutral color. 03. More gingham, this time in the form of linen bedding. 04. This is not actually a new item but a longtime favorite wallpaper that looks great with a lot of the newer pieces. 05. The loveliest beach umbrella I ever did see (on sale now). 06. We have a bunch of S&L’s La Jolla baskets in our house and this new design is similar but in a really nice natural color. 07. I love all the capiz lighting but this little sconce has my heart. 08. A multi-purpose tray that’s great for breakfast in bed or to hold your laptop on the couch. 09. Serena & Lily always has such classic pillows and this ruffled edge one is no exception. 10. Classic rattan in a contemporary cone shape pendant. 11. Marble and rattan: a chic combo for a table. 12. This tray is versatile and scalloped and therefore perfect. 13. How charming is a scalloped sheet peeking out from a comforter? 14. This rug looks perfectly aged and the soft color palette works with a variety of aesthetics. 15. Looks like rattan but this swivel chair is actually made of a weatherproof resin with performance fabric (on sale now). 16. - Coveting: Marie Kondo x The Container Store
Leave it to Marie Kondo to upend the organization industry. The founder of KonMari, Kondo has teamed up with The Container Store to debut a chic, minimalist, and functional line of products. The KonMari method encourages organizing by category vs. location and to keep only items that truly speak to you. When Marie’s Netflix show aired a couple years ago, I, along with every other viewer, started folding our clothes in her signature folded style and I’m proud to say that I’ve stuck with it! Well some of the new Container Store products are made with the intention of using that folding style and maximizing available space. The line is meant to promote sustainability but looks beautiful to boot. I absolutely love that she chose a dark walnut color for most of the wood accents, an unexpected and welcome choice. Below are some products I have my eye on (and have already purchased)! PS. Looking for more organizational items? Check out this post! 01. Clear canisters with bamboo lids come with a silicone gasket to ensure freshness, making them a perfect vessel for pantry staples. However, they would work well in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and play/art rooms too! 02 / Too often I find expandable racks to be boring but this 3 tier version made of bamboo is a lovely addition to a pantry. 03 / How pretty is the watercolor design of this Clarity desktop file? 04 / Spice jars are typically glass but have pretty basic lids…not these bamboo ones! 05 / The wide curved handles set these rattan baskets apart. 06 / A new addition to our kitchen, I love the simplicity of these salt cellars. 07 / The square shape of this ceramic berry colander is atypical of most colanders (which are round/curved). 08 / A multi-purpose bamboo bin (with removable liner) that can handle toy or clothing storage. 09 / This 2-tier bamboo flatware tray maximizes drawer space. 10 / Now that so many of us have home offices (or dining room setups like us!), this monitor stand is a pretty + practical addition for keeping your neck straight while working. 11 / A ceramic canister option in a chic black color with bamboo handle. 12 / I love that Marie has created a closed option spice jar. You don’t always need to see the spices with the right label (see below)! 13 / Clean lines and a pretty dark color make these hangers perfect for a streamlined closet. 14 / Keep your papers organized in this rattan document box (I also love it for storing children’s art!). 15 / Beautify your fridge while making sure food doesn’t go to waste with ceramic fridge bins. 16 / I’m always looking for drawer dividers that aren’t plastic or see-through. Loving these bamboo ones. 17. The key to sticking with your organization? Labels. 18. If an open egg bin doesn’t work for you, simply add a large bamboo lid to allow for stacking. 19 / Another watercolor design but this time on the inside of a recyclable Hikidashi (“drawer” in Japanese) storage box. 20 / Both the glass and ceramic spice jars look lovely displayed on this in-drawer spice organizer. emily PS. - New Year, New Chair with Joss & Main
Yes I realize it’s April but earlier this year I was craving a change in the living room. It’s common to experience home decor fatigue, particularly after the holidays, and more so given how much time we’ve spent in our homes this past year. I’ve used a couple different accent chairs in this living room nook but both had some type of woven component, and decided that something more substantial would elevate the area. Enter my friends at Joss & Main. Due to the location of the picture ledges, any chair I selected had to have a low-ish back but high enough that there's some support. This is easier said than done and eliminated a number of chairs I was eyeing. It also can't be very wide given it's a small space, and I knew that I wanted something with black and fabric which further eliminated some options. Happy Thursday! Is it Thursday? I’ve lost track, ha. Anyone else feeling too much pressure to plan out your days while at home? Whether with work and/or kids? This is unlike anything any of us have ever experienced so I’m starting to lean in more to letting things happen how they happen. That’s not to say we’re not trying to find some consistency with some things regarding Max but I'm just not sure rigid structure is realistic for our family right now. Between a very active 3 year old and both Bill and I trying to work, the weight of what’s happening around us can be overwhelming. To not stress about added screen time for our kids, to not care about ditching a planned activity in favor of something else that better suits everyone at any given time. That what we’re experiencing is NOT normal and therefore we can’t do everything we might normally do. This is a service we always offer {and have a couple underway right now, including an exciting project in San Francisco!}, and while it’s typically for those that live outside the general Boston area, it’s clearly applicable to everyone right now. It goes a little something like this… You fill out a questionnaire. We connect via email/phone/skype. You receive a custom proposal that outlines how our project will unfold, inspiration images, and what the end goal is. You then receive a design plan with notes, layouts, mockups, and a sourcing list that you and/or mStarr can work off of. Your home gets an update, hooray! - A Spring Tablescape in Time for Easter
This time last year I hosted an intimate spring entertaining event at Anthropologie. And I’m not sure I ever shared it on here but as I was cleaning out some stuff on my computer, I was reminded just how pretty the tablescape I put together was! With everyone at home this weekend for Easter, thought I’d share some images in the hopes they inspire you to create your own! Whether for Easter, Passover, or to simply elevate your everyday dining {we could use that right about now amirite?!}, this look can be easily executed. You’ll need: dinner and salad plates {I mixed + matched two styles}, a cotton or linen napkin {ideally with some movement}, flatware, stemless wine or juice glasses, wood boards, ceramic or stoneware vases and candles, woven serving bowls, plus florals and greenery {options are limited these days of course so forage in your yard or use faux options. ‘Tis the season for blooming branches!}. Some of the items from Anthro I used last year aren’t available so I rounded up some substitutes {a few are at Target that you could include in a pick-up order!}. Remember: the goal here is to achieve a very relaxed, organic and curated look. You want this to feel {and be!} effortless. and you can use what you have on hand! mix + match plate styles! It’s all about placement so play around a bit. I love stacking the salad plate off center on top of the dining plate. I love an unfolded napkin no matter where it’s placed.
