- Athena Calderone's Collection with Crate & Barrel is as Good as You'd Expect it to be
above Courbe ceramic lamp via Crate & Barrel above Athena’s Amagansett kitchen with vintage lamp the Courbe was based on via EyeSwoon, photo by Nicole Franzen If you don’t know who Athena Calderone (aka EyeSwoon) is by now, I’m not sure we can be friends. No but seriously Athena is a celebrated, and uber talented, designer, creator, chef, author, podcast host, and so much more. Everything she touches looks effortless and even if her signature organic modernist aesthetic isn’t your usual cup of tea, there’s something to be taken from all her designs and creations. A focus on natural materials and small details, both embracing natural light and leaning into the moodiness that a room may have to offer. In other words, I’m a big fan and have been for years. Athena’s latest collaboration is with Crate & Barrel launched today and it does not disappoint. Given her work straddles both interiors and food, this collection has it all…from cozy shearling seating to ceramic scalloped bowls to incredible re-creations of her cherished vintage lighting (see above photos!). So many beautiful and functional products I had to put together two roundups! Happy shopping. Click the images below to shop! 👇🏻 emily PS. Don’t miss a post. Subscribe to our newsletter! - My Holiday Decor Inspiration...Traditional British Meets Festive Whimsy
Inspiration images sources from top left Rust & Trust, her86m2, The Suffolk Nest, Apartment Therapy, OKA, Shoppe Amber Interiors, mStarr design, Afloral, My Old Pub, The Glossy Nest, The Makerista, Marney Ash, Honeysuckle & Hilda, A Little Bit Southern This will be our second holiday season in what I really-can't-call-the-new-house-anymore (but still do) and I'm very much looking forward to it. We're naturally much more settled after almost a year and a half, and the house has certainly seen some changes since we last decorated. This year I'm feeling a traditional British meets festive whimsy vibe, building on the cottage-leaning aesthetic of our home and last year's decorations. Think velvet bows and gingham ribbon, dried organic accents, mixed greenery (faux and real) garlands, fluted candles, dried citrus, tinsel, and paper lanterns & ornaments. For more inspiration, check out my Holiday Decorating, Holiday Entertaining, Fa la la la la, and Winter Decor Pinterest boards. For holiday shopping, check out our Holiday Hub. - A Holiday Dinner Tablescape with Floral Canopy…and Tips for Creating Your Own Festive Table!
the majority of products seen here were loaned by my friends at Weston Table and gifted by my friends at Afloral For the first time in my 42 years, I can say that I’m hosting Christmas! And as a Jew, that’s a big deal. Ha but really, we are so excited to have Bill’s family up for a couple days and to celebrate altogether in our new home. Last year was the first time we celebrated at home (in the old house) but it was just the 3 of us so while wonderful in many ways, it wasn’t exactly the norm. We’ll get to expand our EQ3 dining table for the first time (it’ll be an um, tight, fit) and given my love of all things tablescapes, I’m pretty darn excited to set said table! I put together a festive and laid-back design featuring an ombré floral canopy, something I was inspired to do when I came across this Over-the-Table Rod from Terrain months ago and this insanely beautiful mantel garland by Hello Flora (via Coco Kelley). It’s the floral version of dining under the stars… t was all quite easy and decidedly imperfect…no need to make this hard on yourself. I set up the rod and got to work tying everything on with floral wire, using mostly dried, preserved + faux florals from Afloral with some fresh greenery mixed in. Did you catch my installation timelapse? For the tablescape itself, I used the most beautiful glassware, textiles, and ceramics from Weston Table. Farmhouse Pottery taper hurricane holders, Libeco Pacifico Linen Placemats that I used as napkins, Simon Pearce vintage style champagne/wine coupes and so much more! Because the focal point is the install, I didn’t want anything too elaborate on the table. I’ve long been a fan of forming table runners with greenery or florals so I did just that with some faux holiday greens and I love how it came together. So after designing dozens and dozens (and dozens) of tablescapes over the years, I’ve got some tips for creating a fun, festive, and not-too-fussy tablescape! 01. Stagger your plates. Place the salad plate a bit off center for a more bespoke look. 02. Make sure your guests can see each other so nothing too tall on the table! 03. Experiment with the location and presentation of the napkins. 04. Garnish the placesetting with greenery, florals, or herbs (in this case, I used thyme). 05. Think about other accents that add a whimsical touch, such as ribbons. 06. Don’t want to go faux? Foraging the day of in your yard or the woods is even better. 07. A beautiful tablescape is possible without any of what I used. You just need a little creativity! While many of the Afloral products aren’t available anymore, they might come back in stock (or you can save them for next year!) so I’ve rounded up what I could (along with some similar options) plus everything from Weston Table below… Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday! emily PS. - Updating #farmhousedialfano with Serena & Lily Lighting
One of the very first things we did after moving was swap the island pendants (below) for new ceramic ones from Serena & Lily. As in I ordered them right after we closed, had them delivered to the old house, hauled them to the new house, and made Bill install them a few days after moving in. Sure I didn’t love those generic black ones but I’ve never had island pendants before and knew that updating the kitchen was going to take some time so I was just itching to do something…and quickly. (above left) taken during our first visit to the house / (above right) the day we installed them! Our kitchen is part of what we call the Big Room, which also houses one of our living spaces and the dining area. It’s the first time I’ve really designed an open concept room and it’s so important that each + every element in the room work together and looks right from all angles. It’s a challenge but a fun one! Because of this, I was looking to add an organic accent that would complement the kitchen but look nice from other spots in the room. And since I had an idea of what I was going to do for a backsplash, decided that the ceramic nature of the Everly pendant would work well with the handmade tile. I’m happy to say that I was correct (let’s be honest, it doesn’t always work out!). If you’ve been around, or on Instagram, for awhile, you know how many Serena & Lily pieces I have/have had around our house. Including this classic flush mount in our entry and this brass sconce that used to be in Max’s room! I’ve rounded up more of my favorite lighting and (update as of March 14, 2022), they’re all on sale now through March 22nd. Get 20% off everything* (including sale!) with code HOME. 01. - Ways to Help Ukraine
The start of artist Lina Gordievski’s Ukrainian Collection It’s been a difficult week for everyone. The Ukrainian people do not deserve to be attacked. Full stop. We can start to feel helpless and disconnected, well really it’s feeling helpless and overwhelmed by so much information (and sadly, misinformation) and so many heartbreaking images and videos. If we can help these brave people in small ways or big ways, it’s still helping. I’ve rounded up some organizations, fundraisers, retailers, and small businesses who are supporting the cause. This is a mix of those that were sent to me, some shared by others, and those that I’ve come across myself. No doubt I’m missing some so please free to comment below or DM me on Instagram! Organizations + Fundraisers USA for UNHCR, UN Refugee Agency World Central Kitchen Together Rising Save the Children International Rescue Committee International Medical Corps Global Giving to help Ukranian Pediatric Cancer Patients Lifting Hands Choose Love UNICEF Retailers + Small Businesses Juniper Print Shop. 100% of the net proceeds of the sales from the Ukrainian Collection will be donated to Lifting Hands. If you’re local to Massachusetts, Eater Boston has a list of what restaurants are hosting fundraisers. La Ligne. A portion of this week’s online sales will be donated to Children in Conflict. Magic Playbook is offering a digital download activity set with 100% net proceeds benefitting Ukrainian refugees via CARE International (you choose the amount to donate, $10 is suggested). Mochi Kids and Amanda Jones are selling a “Make a Love not War” t-shirt. All profits are going to the International Rescue Committee. Lina Gordievski, an artist from Ukraine, is selling beautiful pieces of art (the collection has come together quickly so the beneficiary isn’t confirmed yet nor the final # of pieces). Sign up for her newsletter to get the heads up when the collection is live. Lastly, I saw on Instagram that people are booking AirBnb’s in Ukraine to simply support the owners and it’s a lovely + brilliant idea. I’ll update this post and plan on putting together a Guide on Instagram as well. emily PS. Don’t miss a post. Subscribe to our newsletter! - Sarah Sherman Samuel Debuts a Complete Collection with Lulu & Georgia...and it's GORGEOUS
photo of Sarah Sherman Samuel’s bathroom courtesy of Lulu & Georgia Sarah Sherman Samuel is synonymous with chic, and her signature aesthetic is easily recognizable. Her original collection of wallpaper, rugs and pillows with Lulu & Georgia has been selling out since it first launched several years ago and this expanded collection (complete with furniture) has been long awaited. It’s full of lush layers + textures, imperfectly perfect patterns, muted colors and mismatched pieces that look great together. - Spring is in the Air...with Afloral Faux Flowers!
Afloral’s Green Berry Branches currently in our den Spring is in the air…ok not really, at least here in Massachusetts (it’s snowing as I type this) but once those clocks turn back tomorrow, it’ll certainly feel more like Spring! There’s nothing I love more than fresh flowers and greenery BUT realistic faux florals and branches can be just as impactful and you’ll have them forever. Afloral is who I turn to time and time again when I’m looking for new decor and their Spring (and really summer too) selection right now is GOOD. I just placed an order for much of what you see below. I mean those lilacs? And delphinium?! - Last Minute Holiday Decorating with Target…It’s Not Too Late!
This post is sponsored by my friends at Target. As always, opinions + words are my own. Can you believe Christmas is THIS weekend? I know there are plenty of you who take one day or weekend to hammer out every single decoration but I’m the type of creatively impulsive gal who feels the need (and desire) to add, remove, or restyle often. So when it comes to holiday decor, I tend to start with the basics (wreath, a mini tree, a holiday scented candle) and layer in textures, accents + patterns over time. Maybe I’ve been inspired by something I saw, or it’s just not feeling quite “finished”. Well if you haven’t decorated…or are constantly adding little details daily?! Target’s got you covered for finishing touches. And since we’re hosting this year, I’ll be decorating until the final moment! Ever since we (unexpectedly) removed the wood burning stove in our den (unsure what I’m talking about? Head to the Den Insta Story highlight), I have been counting down the days until our new fireplace arrived. Finally! A place for our stockings! Greenery! Decor! Until we can put in a real or gas fireplace, well this is just perfect. Our house is always filled with various Target items. Seriously…every room, every season and you bet I’ve incorporated plenty into the new fireplace area. I’m not sure what I love more, the classic marble stocking holders or Bruno’s sherpa dog bone stocking! Shop what I used here...some is available for expedited shipping or in-store pickup! the majority of products seen here were loaned by my friends at Weston Table (did you catch my recent post about them?!) Somehow we are exactly one week from Thanksgiving. Huh?! And sure I realize it’s just one week from today and this post might be coming too late for some BUT if you’re still looking for inspiration for your tablescape (or next Thanksgiving, or simply the next time you entertain), this post is for you. I had such fun designing this table. In fact, I had so much fun that I have two more holiday-related tablescapes coming up in the next couple weeks! Maybe you’re new around here or perhaps you’ve forgotten but I used to design weddings and events! And my most favorite part of that job was designing tablescapes. I just love dreaming up something that is beautiful and functional, a place where loved ones can gather and enjoy each other’s company no matter the setting. The Weston Table plates, the flatware, the wine colored napkins?! Just perfect for this nature-inspired design. It’s simple, relaxed, earthy, whimsical, and easy for anyone (yes you!) to put together. I’ve rounded up what I used below and while you can probably get some (most?) of the items in time for next week’s holiday, you can also take the inspiration and build off of it. Don’t have dried ferns? How about using some of those beautiful leaves that are still falling from trees. Take a trip to the grocery store and pick up some Bosc pears and maybe some other dried or fresh fruit for additional accents (figs, red grapes etc.). Tie any napkin you may have with whatever ribbon you may have lying around! I just love the Afloral (my go-to for anything dried or faux) dried ferns and dried gooseberry pods and the textural element they add to the tablescape. Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday! emily PS. Don’t miss a post. Subscribe to our newsletter! - 2021: The Handmade Gift Guide
photo by Bloomist Back with my second gift guide and this one has all handmade, hand crafted and/or artisan products. Giving a handmade item ensures that no two pieces are exactly alike, just like those you love most. Most of these come from small businesses so even better! As a reminder…I tend to curate these gift guides based on products we may already own, products I have my eye on, products that others share, and products from brands I’m already a fan of. There will be some inevitable cross-over so be sure to check out all the guides as I continue to share them. Some items may sell out quickly (but could restock) so you’re best ordering as early as possible this year especially because of inconsistent shipping times, and the handmade nature of some of these. For whatever it’s worth, items I originally included went out of stock while I was making this guide! I’ve also found there’s no rhyme or reason to what’s on schedule and what isn’t these days. Even items from the same company have been on different timelines. And lastly, THANK YOU for checking the guides out and for shopping directly from them if you feel so inclined. It helps keep this lil business of mine going. Want more holiday content? Check everything out the holiday shop and holiday central on the site! 01. A handcrafted stoneware vase by Studio J.
